JRN 363
3 credits
This course is an exploration of long-form magazine stories. Students will learn to develop ideas and craft them into deeply reported, sophisticated pieces with strong narrative drives. They will learn to bring their stories to life using character development, conflict and resolution, scene-setting, foreshadowing, description and dialogue. Required reading assignments and group discussions of works-in-progress will inspire students to develop their own styles. The culminating goal of the course is for each student to produce a reported story suitable for publication. Students will have opportunities to mine their own lives and experiences for first-person pieces on topics of their choosing. Students will also learn how to select markets for their stories, write query letters and pitch their stories for publication.
