This course is an interdisciplinary inquiry and practice into nature writing and photography. Students will learn about the tradition of western and nonwestern nature writing and photography. In order to fully understand nature writing and photography, students will be given a thorough history of their genres, formats, audiences, reception, creative connections, and their impact on conservation and policy. This course will expect students to not only gain a full analytic understanding of the field but to practice the skills of nature writing and photography by keeping an extensive nature journal, become familiar with current ID methodologies, and the tools and techniques of nature photography. The class will conclude with each student producing a significant essay with photographs that will be submitted after revision to a relevant journal.
